Ace Hotel, Portland, OR

Striking a balance between outdoorsy adventurer and Portlandia-esque hipster, Ace walks the fine line between cliché and authenticity. Communal vibes rule the common areas while individualism keeps each unique room fresh at this Ace Hotel favorite.

Going for the contemporary eco-chic cool vibe, Ace’s Portland offering is a hipster beacon, second only to their flagship in Seattle. Borrowing from the city’s penchant for upcycling and reusing, Ace has given a new life to the former Clyde Hotel building, first opened in 1912. Remnants of the early 20th century vibe are sprinkled throughout the hotel, starting with the beige brick exterior and dark wood lobby. As a result of its predecessor, some rooms have access to communal bathrooms while others have private en-suites, similar to their Seattle layout. Each room does have its own unique vibe and decor, ranging from an homage to Old Faithful geyser to a mythic room covered in book pages for wallpaper.

In the morning, stop by Breakfast 215 for a European-style start to your day with fresh offerings from a local CSA (community-supported agriculture), hometown icon Stumptown Coffee, and other regional purveyors. For a more substantial weekend brunch or evening meal, Clyde’s Common boasts seasonal dishes and a communal spirit with long bench tables. Homemade treats like truffle popcorn and fresh focaccia make it a great snack stop, or enjoy their take on American classics, like crispy hot chicken with creamy kale. In the basement you’ll find the moody and intimate Pepe Le Moko. Illuminated by a spotlight, a single bartender crafts classic cocktails with a few surprises, like the oft-overlooked Grasshopper.

Whether you’re here to explore Oregon’s greenery or the dynamic independent spirit of downtown Portland, Ace has you covered. Interactive historical parks like Fort Vancouver National Historic Site are less than an hour’s drive, while the glory of giants like Mount Rainier and Olympic Park are a few hours away in neighboring Washington.

While in Portland proper, take in the off-beat spirit of this environmentally conscious hotspot. Support local suppliers and culinary creatives at Shizuku, an authentic Japanese institution in the heart of downtown for more than a decade. Focusing on taking organic local and seasonal ingredients and transforming them into traditional Japanese dishes, Chef Naoko Tamura elevates the community dining scene. If you’ve ever wondered what Texan food with PNW ingredients would look like, Chef Doug Adams delivers in spades. Try the San Antonio chicken for crispy and delicious Tex-Mex in the heart of Portland. Downtown is also great for browsing the local wares, from iconic new and used bookstore Powell’s to trendy home decor and knick knacks at Canoe.

Travel with Impact

With roots in the LGBTQ+ community, to which the founders of Ace belong, creating welcoming spaces for guests and host communities is at the heart of Ace Hotel’s mission. Recently, they released a renewed policy on uplifting marginalized voices from across their organization, including the implementation of anti-racism and implicit bias training and revision of all wages to ensure that there is no pay bias. Turning to the host communities, Ace has also committed itself not only to fostering relationships with Black-owned businesses and suppliers to help their hotels run smoothly, but also to developing mentorship and career opportunities to all of its employees.
