Location
Holbox is a slender 26-mile-long island in the vast Yum Balam Ecological Reserve, surrounded by a lagoon of crystal-clear emerald water. Flamingos, pelicans, exotic birds, and whale sharks are among the island’s many protected species. The streets are white sand and there are few cars: The most likely vehicle you will see is a bicycle. The whole place feels like a throwback, like Playa del Carmen in the 1980s, or Tulum in the early 2000s. Except now, ecotourism is the leitmotif, even small restaurants might boast a good French chef, and large scale developments are definitely not on the agenda.
