The Angkor complex stands today as the cultural legacy of a Khmer civilization that flourished from the 9th to the 15th century. Jungle engulfed the area following its demise, but today, Angkor Archaeological Park offers visitors over 100 sites to explore. Most famous of all is the monumental Angkor Wat temple, the largest religious stone structure in the world. Enter from the back early in the day if you wish to experience it alone. Walk straight to the Gallery of Bas Reliefs to enjoy 12,000 square feet of carvings detailing Angkor-era life. Contemporary Siem Reap has a life, too, and a new wave of restaurants (like Wat Damnak) bringing Cambodia’s underrated cuisine to the world’s attention.
Travel with Impact
The Shinta Mani Foundation is a global leader in responsible tourism. The foundation works to support local communities, giving Cambodians opportunities to overcome poverty through education, health care, and direct assistance. To date, nearly 300 Khmer students have graduated from the Shinta Mani School of Hospitality and are fully employed in the immediate township. Tours of its various programs are available to hotel guests, and are a true highlight.
