On 75 lush acres overlooking the historic Hudson Valley, Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa is the perfect short getaway for those on the East Coast: intimate, secluded, ensconced in nature—and just a short hop from NYC.
You’ll never need to leave the premises at this quasi-self-sufficient hotel, spa and farm-to-table restaurant. Some accommodations are set in the circa 1764 Main House, while others—suites, carriage houses and multi-bedroom houses with working fireplaces—are scattered across the property. All exude the charm one would expect of a country manor.
The restaurant, Henry’s at the Farm, sources ingredients from the inn's own farm, as well as from other local farms and artisan food producers. The intriguing wine list specializes in New York State wines, and the cocktails have local touches, too. The eco-friendly spa (which includes sauna, steam room, and indoor pool) presents a full menu of services plus stunning views across of the landscaped grounds bordered by virgin woodlands.
For some up-close fauna and farming, wander over to the adjacent orchard, aviary, and organic garden, where alpacas, llamas, sheep, and a family of miniature donkeys, graze. The livestock are the result of the owner’s ongoing rescue efforts: the whole property is a certified animal sanctuary. Exploring the Milton area is also a treat. Aside from the joys of the Hudson, you’ll find breweries and wineries in town, and there’s even a whiskey distillery within a short drive. You may want to borrow a bike if you plan on sampling!
