Casa Violeta, Tulum

This chic and tranquil boutique hotel on Tulum’s white sand shoreline is a favorite hotel for couples on the Mayan Riviera. With only 16 thatched-roof cottages, there’s a real sense of intimacy. In each room, there are fresh flowers and Italian sheets.

Every charming, palapa-style bungalow at Casa Violeta features exposed beams, tropical flowers and original artwork; some have extra beds and airy living rooms. Comfort rules.

At Cocina Violeta, chef Alex Sal blends native Italian cuisine and local classics in a wood-fired oven. (The crisp and tender grilled octopus is a standout.) The restaurant’s floor to ceiling windows let the ocean work its magic on you.

Tulum is a magnet for spiritual seekers, and Casa Violeta is a perfect place to tap into the richness of the Mayan culture and the healing powers of the land. There's an open-air yoga and meditation studio. You can also try a volcanic-rock Temazcal sweat lodge, sound bath, as well as Shamanic ceremonies.

To walk from Casa Violeta along the white sand beach to Tulum Ruins is a walk into the 14th century. Tulum’s beachfront location isn't just the result of a great taste in real estate; this was once a prominent international port and a thriving hub for trade and worship. You’ll find hints of this past from the moment you enter these ruined walls (‘Tulum’ means wall)—from crumbling pyramids to fading frescoes. Enter at the Temple of the Frescoes, where paintings grace the inner walls depicting Chaac, the rain god, and Ixchel, the goddess of women, medicine and the moon. Head to the cliff-side for Tulum's most prominent and preserved ruin, El Castillo to bask in the sweeping views.
