DOWNTOWN, Mexico City, Mexico

Behind a studded, centuries-old wooden door in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll discover a hotel that mixes colonial grandeur with industrial edge, rooms rich in bohemian-chic elegance, and the area’s coolest rooftop pool and bar. It’s another winner from Grupo Habita.

We suggest: bank $600 in Credits and you should be set for a few nights in Mexico City, plus a trip to the rooftop bar for some drinks.

About

Blending colonial 17th-century grandeur with a raw industrial edge, and elements of local indigenous culture into its concept, DOWNTOWN Mexico fully celebrates its location in Mexico City’s Centro Histórico. Known as the “Palacio de los Condes de Miravalle”, the building sits comfortably next to other colonial landmarks on the cobbled street. The 17-room hotel is actually of the oldest residences in the area to maintain this particular Mexican viceregal style. Characteristics include ornate detailing around the facade windows and a stone-forge staircase with intricate handrails, alongside grey volcanic rock walls and handmade cement tiles. Inside, DOWNTOWN Mexico's stripped-back, industrial elegance creates a bohemian chic environment, from its rooms, to its lush garden patio, and up to its immense rooftop terrace, where guests can get a glimpse over the area’s historic buildings.

Location

Revolving around the The El Zócalo Plaza—the largest plaza in Latin America, location of both the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, Centro Histórico plays host to many of the sights and artifacts that comprise Mexico’s political, cultural, and Aztec past. The area itself has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Aside from history, Mexico City’s bustling pedestrian heart also offers a wealth of dining, cocktail bars, art galleries, and live performances, on both street and stage. Beat the crowds with an early morning tour of the Teotihuacan Pyramid, stop off for breakfast at the lovely restaurant El Cardenal, then laze the day away in Almeda Central, Mexico's oldest municipal park.
