Built in 1922 as a quintessential Palm Springs estate with architecture and antiques that spared no expense, Ingleside became known as the ultimate invitation-only hideaway among the luminaries of Hollywood’s Golden Age, from Marlon Brando to Marilyn Monroe. By the 1970s, Frank Sinatra and his hep-cats were regular fixtures at Melyvn’s, the hotel’s jazzy eatery. In 2019, a brand new era began for the historic hotel under Proper Hospitality Group. Ingleside’s 30 rooms and villas, no two alike, still exude the Old Hollywood charm. The four-poster beds and terracotta floors have been brought right up to date with modern designer furnishings, luxe linens, and indulgent bathrooms, featuring brass vanities. Melvyn's, too, has fresh new edge, combining the 30s, the 70s, and today. This hip hotel’s hideaway spirit is lively, and serene, as ever.
Location
Set at the foot of rugged Mt. San Jacinto, you don’t need to stray beyond your shaded Italian lounger to enjoy Ingleside’s idyllic surrounds, full of fragrant citrus, hot-pink bougainvillea, mesquite trees and climbing vines. Poolside yoga, weekend meditation classes, lawn croquet, and tennis are all on offer right here. For adventures farther afield, grab a hotel bicycle and tour the modernist marvels of downtown Palm Springs. If you prefer feet over wheels, take a pre-dawn hike on the eerily illuminated Palm Desert trail to see the sun rise over the famous cross at the top. The trail is a three-mile elevated loop, and while it has rough and steep patches, it won’t stop the family. The views of Joshua Tree and the Santa Rosa mountains are well worth it.
