Located in the historic center of charming Puebla, La Purificadora is the new incarnation of an 19th-century water purification factory. The tradition of purity is still the guiding leitmotif at this minimalist, edgy, but still warm Design Hotels™ member, a Grupo Habita property, designed by Legorreta + Legorreta. The retention of many of the building's original elements, including crumbling walls and stone aqueducts, gives La Purificadora authenticity, while modern additions like a glass-walled swimming pool and sleek purple lounge chairs create a clean, sophisticated ambience. The resulting mix of new and old, texture and shape, is truly impressive. Also impressive: most of the hotel's 26 guestrooms (including three suites with private whirlpools) offer spectacular views of the hotel gardens and the city center beyond, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Location
Founded in 1531 as "La Puebla de los Ángeles" Puebla’s strategic location, half-way between the port of Veracruz and Mexico City, made it the second most important city during the Spanish colonial era. A stroll around town justifies its position as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the city center is chock full of interesting and colorful facades featuring local Talavera tiles and baroque ornamentation. One of the best examples is close to the hotel: the gorgeous San Francisco church, painted yellow, clad in brick and azulejos (tile mosaic). The Renaissance-era Puebla Cathedral in the central square, boasts bell towers and dense gold interiors, a prime example of Spanish Baroque. Aside from the history and architecture, the other reason to visit Puebla is the magnificent food, arguably the best in Mexico. The Mole Pueblano is renowned worldwide, but don’t miss sampling some yummy Tinga Poblana while you are here either.
