Monkey Island Estate, The Thames

Over the years, this pastoral spot 30 minutes from London has been the hidden haunt of monarchs, aristocrats, and artists. Now it’s the perfect country weekend escape from the city, with oodles of history, wellness, and fine dining.

About

The ceiling of Monkey Island Estate's fabulous Monkey Room depicts frisky primates in human scenes, but the name of this picturesque sliver of land on the Thames derives from Monk’s Ey, or monk’s island—which dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was inhabited by an order of apothecary friars. The medicinal isle was bought by the 3rd Duke of Marlborough in 1723 as a fishing retreat. It has remained an idyllic city escape ever since.

The Estate covers both sides of the river, connected by a small walking bridge. Throughout, you’ll find charming rooms, manicured gardens, and many spaces to spend time: the Monkey Bar, Monkey Island Brasserie, the Whisky Snug, and the Floating Spa—a specially built riverboat spa that rocks as you relax.

Location

Just seven miles from Windsor Castle and ten from Ascot, the estate is both a jumping-off point, and a destination in itself. You can make a day of it—there’s plenty to spend Hotel Credits on that doesn’t include a room. But once you arrive, we think you'll be enticed to stay the weekend. Consider that Monkey Island Estate's host town, Bray, boasts three of the UK’s six Michelin-starred restaurants, along with tons of gorgeous countryside. For further picturesque exploration, nearby Eton is a beautiful village, and home of the country’s most prestigious private school. (If that gets your gander up, note that George Orwell and Hugh Laurie both attended, and they’re not half bad.)
